Sixteen years after Jordan and Israel reached a peace treaty that ended their 46-year state of war, bilateral relations are at best lukewarm as the kingdom is worried by the policies of the Jewish state's rightwing government, the London-based daily ASHARQ AL AWSAT reported on Nov. 5. "Relations between Jordan and Israel vary between overt high tide and covert low tide, while many of these relations' complicated aspects are veiled with secrecy," the Saudi-owned newspaper said in an Amman datelined report. "Amman still deals shyly with Tel Aviv for various reasons, especially domestic Jordanian sensitivities," it added. "Good aspects in Jordanian-Israeli relations include a high-level of security cooperation, which has been going on strong, despite the absence of successive Jordanian ambassadors from Tel Aviv on too many occasions since the second Palestinian intifada broke out in 2001," wrote ASHARQ AL AWSAT 's Amman correspondent, Mohammed Daama. "In the most recent move in this regard, Jordan appointed its Israel ambassador, Ali Ayed, as minister of information in the aftermath of Israel's attack on an aid flotilla destined for Gaza in May," he said. "Ayed's diplomatic post remains vacant," he added. "If one reads Jordanian newspapers or watches the government-owned TV station's news bulletin, one would think Jordan is still at war with Israel, despite deep common strategic interests between the two countries," the newspaper said.
